Prophesy of Goth, Grunge and Heroin, Maxim W.
Furek, MA, CAC is Director of Garden Walk Recovery, an
organization "promoting wellness through drug
prevention and education." He is recognized as a
leading researcher of Generation X (individuals born
between 1965 - 1978) and their unique culture of music,
perceived violence and substance abuse. He is a
published author and has written numerous articles
pertaining to addictions and recovery for publications
such as Professional Counselor, Recovery Press
and the US Journal of Drug and Alcohol
Dependence. His most recent article , submitted
for peer-review, is entitled “Heroin in the Cinema:The
Glorification of the Junkie.” It appeared in
Counselor Magazine, July/August 2007 .
Maxim is the former Coordinator for Drug and Alcohol
Services at Danville State Hospital where he organized
the first Double Trouble Twelve- Step support groups in
the region for Individuals With Co-Occuring Disorders.
His programs have served as models for other agencies
in Northeastern and North Central Pennsylvania. His
background is in psychology, mental health and
addictions. He obtained his undergraduate degree from
Aquinas College and his graduate degree from Bloomsburg
University.
He is a member of NAADAC and serves as trainer for the
Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs , PA Dept of
Health, Institute for Research, Education and Training
in Addictions and the PA Certification Board. Maxim
participated in the 2006 Methamphetamine Summit held in
Dubois,PA and is currently developing protocols for
methamphetamine abuse and binge drinking. He has
presented seminars on club drugs, gateway drugs and on
current drug trends, including the various substances
of abuse of Generation X and Generation Y .
For a 14-year period Maxim served as Editor / Publisher of Steele Jungle Publications, recognized as "the foremost anti - steroid publication in the United States." His publication was the official journal of the leading anti-drug organizations in the nation including the ANBC, NABF, NGA , UNBA and WFNA.He was appointed to the Advisory Committee of the National Steroid Research Center (NSRC)and has served as consultant and Expert Witness in matters relating to professional bodybuilding. Maxim continues to be an outspoken critic of illegal and dangerous ergogenic drugs such as anabolic steroids, EPO and human growth hormone.
